FITNESS MODELING

FITNESS MODELING

Getting into the field of fitness modeling can be a bit of a mystery to many aspiring models. Those already working as fitness models will attest to the fact that there is no specific path or secret to success in fitness modeling. Fitness modeling for print magazines can be a great way for talent to break into other forms of modeling as well, with many successful fitness models eventually finding their way to films, television, commercials and other projects.

Fitness modeling is sometimes associated with bodybuilding, bikini contests or other forms of posing competitions. But the truth is most working fitness models did not focus on competitions exclusively. There can be exposure value in entering competitions though. Many industry talent seekers such as scouts, photographers, editors and others will attend the larger competitions. Winning a title can increase a model's exposure to the press but will not guarantee success.

Aspiring fitness models should attend a few fitness modeling shows and competitions in their area to familiarize themselves with the process. It helps to have a clear marketing plan when you arrive at a show and begin networking.

It is also very important to have all your materials ready for the show. Bring your business cards along with head and body photographs with your contact info on the back of each. You can’t wait around to be discovered, you'll have to actively market yourself if you want to have a chance of success in fitness modeling. A good portfolio containing professional photos and a personal web site address can go a long way toward increasing your chances of getting work.

Another way to maximize your chances of getting work in fitness modeling magazines is to become thoroughly familiar with each publication you are targeting. Note who the major players at each magazine are and remember their names in case you are fortunate enough to meet them in person at a future industry event. Familiarize yourself with each magazine's web site as well. There nothing preventing a model from mailing a query and professional quality photos directly to the staff at a magazine. It might just open a door to getting discovered and landing paying work in the fitness modeling business.
